In 1933 an evening earthquake shook Long Beach, resulting in the deaths of 52 Long Beach residents and destroying 70 schools. Within one month the Field Act was passed by the California State Legislature which put the DSA in charge of public school architecture. In the following 90 years no school in California has collapsed or had a fatality from a seismic event.

November 16, 2022 — The new $42M Billie Jean King Main Library in downtown Long Beach, CA, is undeniably stunning. On the outside, at least.
To many residents it remains a mystery what the building looks like on the inside. The problem is the Library's hours: closed Sundays and Mondays, open just a few hours per day the rest of the week.
The 114 year old stone reads "Gift of Andrew Carnegie A.D. 1908". Carnegie famously got rich by taking Monday off and starting work at noon on Wednesdays.

November 14, 2022 — Deukmejian Courthouse, Long Beach, California - A young woman was released to her friends and family today after 44 days in jail and pleading no contest to a charge of Grand Theft Auto.
The woman appeared remorseful and answered all questions asked by the people's representative and the Honorable Judge Debra A. Cole with a prompt "Yes, ma'am". She was ordered to pay $400 restitution to the owner of the vehicle and given 2 years of probation along with other conditions of release.

With Honorable Judge Debra A. Cole presiding, the District Attorney presented the people's side of case NA119104.
